PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- The U.S. House this week approved a bill to rename a northeast Portland post office for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Congressman Earl Blumenauer sponsored the bill that resulted from an effort led by Portland letter carriers Isham Harris and Jamie Partridge. The post office in question is located 630 N.E. Killingsworth St., right in the heart of Portland's historically African American neighborhood. During the 2008 election, it was the site of at least one merchant selling Barack Obama T shirts and it was down the street from the local Obama campaign headquarters.
Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley have introduced a companion bill in the Senate.
