Students across the Battle Ground Public Schools district are finding ways to recognize our country's men and women in uniform during this Veterans Day week. From videos featuring family members to a drive through event, students will honor the heroes of our nation.

An abundace of celebratory events

Daybreak Middle School is inviting veterans to drive through the parking lot (entrance off of NE 239th Street) between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 10. Students will greet them and provide a token of appreciation. Members of the community are also welcome to attend and stand along the drive-thru route.

Members of the Battle Ground High School Junior Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps (AFJROTC) pre-recorded a “Present the Colors” video to share with middle schools whose students go on to attend  BGHS. Cadets and color guard members will also present the colors and hold a flag folding ceremony on Nov. 11 at Overlook Park in Ridgefield at 10:00 a.m. A second color guard team will present the colors at the Fort Vancouver Artillery Barracks at 10:00 a.m. on Nov. 11 as part of the Community Military Appreciation Committee (CMAC) event. The cadet corps is also putting together a display in the main hallway of Battle Ground High School to honor staff members who served in the military.

Other schools are creating videos or slideshows featuring student family members who served.

At Tukes Valley Middle and Primary schools, over 500 flags will be displayed in classrooms and students will watch a video recognizing veterans connected to the school.

The Associated Student Body (ASB) at Prairie High School is also creating a video featuring local veterans to be shown on Wednesday.

CAM Academy will hold a virtual Veterans Day assembly on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 1:00 p.m. featuring parents who served in the military. The celebration will be livestreamed into classrooms and feature a history of Veterans Day, a student poem, a singing of the National Anthem, and third graders singing a pre-recorded version of the “We the People” song. Students will also hand out stars to recognize family members or friends who served.
